Member Toolbox

Welcome to the ESA Member Toolbox page. This page is designed to be a single-location for your most common membership needs with regards to keeping your ESA membership current and accurate.

Encourage your colleagues to join and renew with ESA by telephone

Leaving a message with a person's voice mail:

Generally, when leaving a message, the shorter the better. You don’t need to get into costs, benefits, and values on a message. Just give them a reason to call you back.

“Hi ________. This is _________ and I'm calling on behalf of the Entomological Society of America. Our records indicate that you are not currently a member of the Society, which was surprising to me. Please call me at phone___________ and I can walk you through some of the basics of Society membership.”

Calling a lapsed member:

Hi, __________!  My name is ____________ and I’m calling on behalf of the Entomological Society of America.  We are taking a day to call members whose memberships have lapsed. Our records indicate that you have not yet renewed your membership dues for the current year. This is just a courtesy call -- Are you planning to renew?

YES

NO

If “yes, planning to renew”:

Great! I'll be happy to help you. Did you know that your dues can now be instantly processed online? ESA recently revamped its entire website and improved the overall functionality dramatically. You can also send your dues form directly to the bank with a check, credit card, or money order.

If Member wishes to receive another dues form:

Dues reminders are mailed in early November, again in mid-January, and finally in late March to all remaining lapsed members. Did you get one? If not, I can email or fax you one right now.

Member requests an address to mail payment:

Entomological Society of America

c/o Wachovia Bank
P.O. Box 758954
Baltimore, MD 21275-8954

If “no, not planning to renew” or “not sure”:

If the member says "I don't see the value or benefits of membership"

Well, I certainly appreciate your desire to search for a good value right now in these uncertain economic times. What services are you looking for that ESA is not currently providing?  Here's an interesting exercise ... let me list a few of the benefits that ESA provides and you tell me if you use them frequently, sometimes, or not at all, and we can determine together whether or not ESA makes sense for you on strictly economic terms (don’t forget all the intangible benefits ESA offers, however, such as networking opportunities, advancement and promotion of the science, and prestige)

As you can see, you are getting more than your money's worth for your dues. So if this is just a dollars and cents issue, I’d like to help you renew now. (see above)

"I am between jobs and can't afford dues"

I understand and am certainly empathetic to your situation. This is a rough economy and sometimes it seems that cutting your professional memberships is an easy way to reduce expenses. What many of our members have found, however, is that this can be a counter-productive maneuver. Networking is an integral part of a job search and some studies indicate that up to 80% of all jobs filled were never advertised. Building and maintaining your network through a professional association is a great career move. Have you accessed the online jobs from the ESA website or used the online Membership Directory?

"I am just not interested this year - maybe next year."

I certainly appreciate your time and the opportunity to talk with you. All I would ask in closing is that you check out the new website and bookmark it. There have been so many improvements in recent months that I want to make sure you realize what all you are missing. The URL is still the same as before www.entsoc.org.  Thanks for your time.

"I am not renewing because  . . ."

If you come across a reason for not renewing that you cannot answer, please contact either Renee Harris, Director of Membership and Marketing, or the current Chair of the ESA Membership Committee. We can help answer any objections you get.
