97th Pacific Branch ESA Annual Meeting
April 7-10, 2013
Harrah’s Lake Tahoe, Stateline, NV
The theme of the 2013 PBESA Photo Salon is “There’s no place like home: Interesting insects from non-exotic locations.” We are looking for photos from insects in your neighborhood, your workplace, your backyard. What kinds of tiny, unexpected wildlife are lurking where you live? Of course, you are also welcome to submit exotic species from far-off locations.
This year’s Photo Salon will again be co-organized by Jeff Miller and Chris Hedstrom. We invite Pacific Branch Members to submit no more than three (3) digital images that will be shown during the Photo Salon session. Send your images by Friday March 22. A select subset of images will be shown during the Monday Evening Mixer and during the Tuesday Awards Luncheon. The Photo Salon is for sharing the fascination of insect form, function, and behavior.
This is not a photographic competition, no fees, no points, no ribbons. However, two categories have been established for recognition of the most “outstanding image”: 1) student submission, and 2) non-student submission. Each of the most “outstanding” images will be accompanied by a $50 cash prize. So, feel the spirit of the theme and submit your most interesting, cool, awesome, eye-popping, and bugolicious photos. Any level of digital manipulation, graphic editing, and image improvement is just fine with us. Even high-quality cell phone photos are eligible.
Eligibility: must be a member of ESA; meeting attendance is not required.
The Subject: all insect taxa are eligible; terrestrial arthropods may be included as well.
Image Format: submit either a jpg or a tif (8-bit only); no other formats will be accepted.
Image size: a maximum size equivalent to 3000 x 2250 pixels OR 10in x 7.5in at 300 dpi, either way the image should not exceed 1.7MB; smaller than the aforementioned dimensions is fine assuming you are satisfied with the quality. Remember, the tif format is higher quality but tif is also a size-hog so the tif dimensions will need to be smaller, keep them under 1.7MB.
Filename: must be as follows:
-Student - STU_fulllastnameinitials#_imagetitle.jpg (or .tif)
- Non-student - NON_fulllastnameinitials#_imagetitle.jpg (or .tif)
Where, # = 1, 2, and/or 3 submission; image title is really short, such as a shortened name of insect.
Example filename: STU_HedstromC1_stinkbug.jpg
Submission Method: send an attachment to an email addressed to hedstroc@hort.oregonstate.edu; or send a CD to Chris Hedstrom, Department of Horticulture, ALS Bldg. Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR. 97330. Please include your phone number for emergency contact concerning any fatal errors regarding your images.
Deadline: be sure to share the photo bug by submitting up to three (3) image(s) via email or postmark no later than Friday March 22, 2013.
