NATIONAL INVASIVE SPECIES AWARENESS WEEK (NISAW) ORGANIZERS PLAN TWO DISTINCT EFFORTS IN 2011

P-IE supported NISAW 2010 with funding and expert personnel.  For 2011, the program organizers split the initiative into two distinct objectives occurring over two different weeks in Washington, D.C.

  • P-IE SUPPORTS NATIONAL INVASIVE SPECIES AWARENESS WEEK (NISAW)
Along with the Weed Science Society of America and the American Phytopathological Society, P-IE is supporting NISAW 2011. Scheduled from Feb. 28 – Mar 4, 2011 in Washington D.C. the organizers are programming a week of activities, briefings, and events to highlight what is being done across the nation and around the world to stop and slow the spread of invasive species.  Continuing the progress made in NISAW 2010, this “all taxa” program will give entomologists the opportunity to learn from, educate, and network with expert scientists from other related disciplines.  For more information, visit www.nisaw.org

  • P-IE SUPPORTS NATIONAL INVASIVE SPECIES ADVOCACY WEEK
Along with other organizations, both private and non-profit, P-IE is committed to contribute to the Advocacy week (Mar 14 – 17, 2010) which is being developed and coordinated by the Healthy Habitats Coalition (HHC) http://www.nawma.org/HabitatComm.asp.  Strategic planning for the week is focused on leveraging the U.S. Western Governors’ Association (www.westgov.org) resolution 10-4, “Combating Invasive Species”.  All U.S. Western Governors support this resolution, and so, P-IE has invited the leaders of the three western-most ESA Branches (Pacific, Southwest, and North Central) to consider partnering with P-IE in recruiting entomologists to join state-based “teams of three”.  The teams will be educated and organized by HHC prior to meeting with legislative and agency leaders in Washington, D.C. to meet the goals of Advocacy Week.
