Election of Editorial Board Members
Chair Conn announced appointments of Section D representatives on three ESA editorial boards. Steve Dobson will serve on Journal of Medical Entomology, Jeff Tomberlin will serve on Annals of the ESA, and Kimberley Lohmeyer will serve on American Entomologist. All are five-year appointments beginning in 2005.
Call for 2005 Symposia
Nancy Hinkle announced there will be a call for symposia proposals in mid-December for the 2005 ESA Annual Meeting.
2005 Annual Meeting Theme
Chair Conn then turned the floor over to Governing Board Representative Ed Schmidtmann to introduce incoming President Mike Ivie, who had asked to address Section D members in response to their resolution expressing their concern about his proposed theme for the 2005 meeting, Sex, Bugs and Rock N' Roll. After apologizing for any anguish his proposal had caused, Ivie proceeded to explain his rationale. He said the theme was chosen to appeal to younger, new professional entomologists, a demographic group that is key for the future of ESA membership. He also sought a theme that would attract attention and interest of people outside ESA, including the press, who are the ones who promote our exciting science, education and service. After brief discussion, Section D members present thanked Ivie for his leadership and sincerity.
Governing Board Report, Ed Schmidtmann
Ed Schmidtmann reported that meeting registrations had met projections, and ESA’s budget in 2004 would be balanced. Planning for the 2005 meeting in Fort Lauderdale is well under way, including increased efforts by the Entomological Foundation to encourage youth to become involved in entomology.
Publications Council Report
Bill Reisen discussed five subjects. (1) After explaining the complexities of electronic publication, he announced that Journal of Medical Entomology (JME) papers will be indexed in the PubMed system. Cadmus will continue to print hard copies of the journal. Ingenta will provide electronic versions, and BioOne will be handle institutional subscriptions. These arrangements will make JME papers more widely available through electronic distribution channels. (2) The council agreed that author purchase of PDF reprints would satisfy needs for open access to NIH-funded research results, so no changes in current ESA publication policies are needed. (3) The council decided to dispense with tri-annual reviews of its journals, although they recognize there is a need for quality control and subject matter review. (4) ESA will continue to publish handbooks. (5) ESA will continue to publish Thomas Say Monographs.
