The designation of ESA Fellow recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to entomology. They need not be members of the Society. Up to 10 designations may be made annually. Fellows receive gratis registration to the ESA Annual Meeting in the year the title is bestowed, at which time they are presented with an inscribed plaque.
The Fellows judging panel consists of people who have already been selected as Fellows themselves, and when possible consists of one member from each ESA Branch and Section. Each year the judging panel recommends to the ESA Governing Board up to 10 individuals for consideration for recognition as Fellows of the Society.
Nominees must have made outstanding contributions in one or more of the following areas of entomology:
Research—Nominees for ESA
Fellow on the basis of RESEARCH should have a documented record of
discoveries that create significant new understanding, technology, or
application of entomological science through an extensive body of work. They
will be recognized widely as being in the top tier of researchers
advancing/utilizing the science of entomology. The nominee’s achievements
should be consistent with one or more of these characterizations of
distinction:
• Extensive record of refereed publications in ESA or other high quality
journals that demonstrate discoveries leading to increased understanding of
one or more components of entomological science. The body of work must be
productive in number and compelling in scope and impact to the understanding
of entomological science, which may include a strong record of funding.
• Extensive record of patents issued related to discoveries that create new
technology classes and/or support the development of new, novel, and
successfully adopted pest management products that are considered highly
progressive in the era of their discovery.
• Extensive evidence for creation of pioneering approaches to the
application of research data and products to create new paradigms for
arthropod management that are considered highly progressive in the era of
their use. This work will be supported with an extensive record of economic
development, brand creation, publications, patents, or other direct evidence
that the approaches have had a positive impact on society.
• Awards and recognition from the nominee’s institution, professional
organizations, and/or stakeholder groups.
Teaching—Nominees for ESA
Fellow on the basis of TEACHING should have a documented record of success
in clearly raising the profile of entomology. They will be recognized widely
as being in the top tier of teachers with significant influence and broad
recognition. The nominee’s achievements should be consistent with one or
more of these characterizations of distinction:
• Extensive record and documented evidence of teaching influence, with the
effect of positively raising the profile of entomology in the relevant
target community. The body of work should include a record of classroom
success, using criteria such as class evaluations and enrollment growth, and
evidence of creating new materials (e.g., texts) and developing innovative
methods or novel approaches.
• For individuals without a direct teaching appointment, extensive evidence
of activities within the category, such as appointment as an adjunct
professor, creator of progressive intern or mentoring programs, regular
guest lecturer at multiple institutions, or demonstrated use of technology
transfer to benefit the target audience through application of entomological
science.
• Recipient of grants, awards, and other recognitions from the nominee’s
institution and/or stakeholder groups that demonstrate the progressive
nature of improving instruction of entomology or of topics for which insects
may be used as a mechanism for instruction.
Extension and Outreach—Nominees
for ESA Fellow on the basis of EXTENSION and OUTREACH should have a
documented record of success with raising the profile of entomology in the
relevant target community and be widely recognized as an opinion leader in
his/her field of application. They will be recognized widely as being in the
top tier of individuals within his or her specialized focus of application.
The nominee’s achievements should be consistent with one or more of these
characterizations of distinction:
• Extensive record and documented evidence of influence in the adoption and
use of best practices, with the effect of raising the profile of entomology
and progressive research-based practices in the target communities.
Supportive record of applied research and widely viewed as a credible
expert. Creation of or significantly contributed to innovative uses of
information delivery systems, with impact documented as shifts in common
practice to best practice for the era.
• For individuals without an official Extension appointment, an extensive
record and visible evidence of supportive activities may include appointment
as an adjunct professor, a record of creating progressive outreach programs,
regular invitations as a guest speaker, and demonstrated use of technology
transfer to benefit a public audience or application. The expectation of
widely documented expertise and status as an opinion leader is essential.
• Refereed publications, receipt of grants, awards, and other recognitions
from the nominee’s institution and/or stakeholder groups also demonstrate
the progressive nature and value of raising the application of entomological
science in the relevant target communities.
Administration—Nominees
for ESA Fellow on the basis of ADMINISTRATION should have a documented
record of success through leadership of others to create progressive
programs, strengthen public-private partnerships, and advance multiple
discoveries and applications. Through entomology-related administration, nominees should be widely recognized as being in the top tier of individuals
among their peer administrators. The nominee’s achievements should be
consistent with one or more of these characterizations of distinction:
• Extensive record and documented evidence of influence through positive
directional change in the science and profession of public-sector
entomology. Established or guided creation of new research directions and
teaching and extension/outreach programs that have resulted in significant
achievements within multiple areas of entomology for the era.
• Extensive record and documented evidence of influence through positive
directional change in the science and profession of private-sector
entomology. Established or guided creation of new research directions and
programs that resulted in novel products with progressive attributes for the
era.
• Visible leadership to strengthen public-private progress and partnerships
with personal engagement to reduce barriers to objective solutions and
discoveries.
• Evidence of supporting the principles of scientific peer review,
demonstrated through leadership of his or her organization as a role model,
and demonstrated skills of organizational effectiveness and transformational
leadership.
