New research from the University of Cambridge sheds light on how fleas jump, reaching speeds as fast as 1.9 meters per second. Using high-speed recording equipment and sophisticated mathematical models, researchers found that the insects turn themselves into catapults, storing up energy that they release as they push off the ground with what passes, in fleas, for feet.
