The Secret Lives of Honeybees

Using forward-looking infrared (FLIR) cameras, Barrett Klein from the University of Konstanz in Germany has peered through the transparent windows of observation hives to catch a rare glimpse of honeybees performing “waggle” dances. These dances serve several purposes, including heating the brood, communicating the direction and distance of desirable destinations to sisters, and thermally slaughtering invaders (in this case, the wasp Vespula germanica).
