Gadi Reddy Wins USDA Competitive Funding

Dr. Gadi V.P. Reddy, an entomologist at the Western Pacific Tropical Research Center in Guam, was recently awarded an $188,000 grant from USDA-National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) Pest Management Alternatives Program (PMAP).

Yong-Lak Park Studying BMSB Predator

Dr. Yong-Lak Park, an assistant professor at West Virginia University, is studying the potential of the spined soldier bug as a natural deterrent to the brown marmorated stink bug. The spined soldier bug is another variety of stink bug but is considered a beneficial predator that feeds on other insects. Read the full article.

Aaron Gassmann Receives Young Professor Award

Aaron Gassmann, assistant professor of entomology at Iowa State University, is one of 18 scientists from around the world to receive a 2011 DuPont Young Professor Award.

The DuPont Young Professor program began in 1967 to provide start-up assistance to promising young tenure-track research faculty working in areas of interest to the company.

Gassmann will receive $75,000 over three years and will use the award for cross-disciplinary research aimed at countering the threat of pest resistance to transgenic corn.

State University, has become a leader in the emerging field of genetically engineering insects to prevent transmission of diseases such as malaria and dengue fever and to reduce pests' toll on crops.
