ESA Launches Entomology Today Blog

Annapolis, MD; July 31, 2013 -- The Entomological Society of America (ESA) recently launched the Entomology Today Blog (http://www.entomologytoday.org), a project designed to highlight news stories about insects and related arthropods, cover meetings and events from entomological societies, and to provide a venue for entomologists to share their research and discoveries online.

ESA Announces 2013 Fellows

Annapolis, MD; July 31, 2013 -- The Governing Board of the Entomological Society of America has elected ten new Fellows of the Society for 2013. The election as a Fellow acknowledges outstanding contributions to entomology in one or more of the following: research, teaching, extension, or administration. The following Fellows will be recognized during Entomology 2013 -- ESA's 61st Annual Meeting -- which will be held November 10-13, 2013 in Austin, Texas:

ESA Overhauls ACE Program

Annapolis, MD; July 29, 2013 -- The Entomological Society of America (ESA) recently announced several important improvements to its Associate Certified Entomologist (ACE) program. They include:

- Requiring Continuing Education Units (CEU) for ACE renewal
- ACE applications and renewals moving to a three-year renewal cycle
- A new ACE exam to debut in January 2014
- The debut of a new ACE Award

New JIPM Articles Useful for Farmers and Military

Annapolis, MD; July 29, 2013 -- The latest issue of the Journal of Integrated Pest Management (http://www.entsoc.org/jipm) -- an open-access, peer-reviewed, extension journal covering the field of integrated pest management -- contains articles on using IPM to control corn earworms, beetles, and other insect pests, plus an article highlighting the accomplishments of the Research Program for Deployed Warfighter Protection against disease-carrying insects.

Annapolis, MD; June 5, 2013 -- The emerald ash borer (EAB), a relatively new invasive insect pest, has killed tens of millions of ash trees throughout the eastern United States since it was first detected in 2002 in Michigan and Canada. This insect has the potential to kill an estimated seven billion ash trees in urban and rural forests and could cause tens of billions of dollars in damage.

Wild Turkey Damage to Crops Mostly Exaggerated

However, a literature review which was recently published in the June 2013 issue of Journal of Integrated Pest Management, finds that these claims are mostly exaggerated.

Monsanto Academic Freedom Program for Entomology Students

Entomological Society of Canada to Co-locate Meeting with ICE 2016

Lanham, MD; May 15, 2013 -- The Entomological Society of Canada (ESC) recently announced that it would co-locate its 2016 annual meeting with the 2016 International Congress of Entomology (ICE 2016) in Orlando, Florida. They will be joined by the Entomological Society of America (ESA), the host of ICE 2016, who will also co-locate their 2016 annual meeting in Orlando. This combination of three entomology meetings is expected to be the largest gathering of scientists and experts in the history of insect science, with an expected attendance of more than 6,000 delegates.
