Did Termites Help Katrina Destroy New Orleans Floodwalls?

New research presented in the fall issue of American Entomologist suggests Formosan subterranean termites damaged New Orleans dikes.

Lanham, MD; October 14, 2008—Three years after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, people still speculate over causes of the destruction of the city’s floodwall system. A new article in the fall issue of American Entomologist (Vol. 54, No. 3) suggests that Formosan subterranean termites played a large role.

ESA Names 2008 Award Winners

Lanham, MD; September 29, 2008—The Entomological Society of America (ESA) is pleased to announce the winners of its 2008 awards. The Society’s professional awards will be presented at the 2008 Annual Meeting in Reno, Nevada during the Plenary Session from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on the evening of Sunday, November 16, 2008. The student awards will be presented from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18. The awardees are listed below.

ESA Names New Fellows for 2008

Lanham, MD; September 2, 2008—The Entomological Society of America (ESA) is proud to announce its selection of ten new Fellows. Selection as an ESA Fellow acknowledges outstanding contributions in research, teaching, extension, or administration. The following honorees will be recognized during the ESA Annual Meeting, which will be held from November 16-19, 2008 in Reno, Nevada.

ESA Gets a New Executive Director

Lanham, MD; January 10, 2008—The Entomological Society of America (ESA) is proud to announce the appointment of Robin Kriegel, CAE as its new Executive Director. She replaces Ann Kenworthy, CAE, who served as Interim Executive Director in 2007.

Kriegel is an experienced senior association executive with 20 years’ experience as a CEO at the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition and the American Association of Medical Society Executives. She began her association management career as a staff specialist at the National Student Nurses’ Association.

Entomological Society Announces 2007 Award Winners

ESA Celebrates 100 Years of Insect Science Journals

Journal of Economic Entomology and Annals of the ESA are a century old

Lanham, MD; September 20, 2007 – This year marks the 100-year anniversaries of Annals of the Entomological Society of America and Journal of Economic Entomology (JEE), ESA’s two oldest oldest journals. The occasion will be celebrated at ESA’s 55th Annual Meeting in San Diego this December, where over 2,000 entomologists will gather for four days of insect science symposia and other events.

Handbook of Small Grain Insects Available Now

Lanham, MD; September 18, 2007 – The Entomological Society of America (ESA), in cooperation with the American Phytopathological Society (APS), announces the publication of Handbook of Small Grain Insects, the latest in ESA’s Insect Pest Handbooks series. ESA Organizational Renewal Passes

Lanham, MD; June 1, 2007 – The voting period on ESA Organizational Renewal ended at midnight, May 31, 2007. Results are in, and the Renewal passed with 88% of voting members in favor of the changes.
