Becoming an Associate Certified Entomologist (ACE)
Step 4: Selecting a Proctor
Selecting a proctor is an important step in a person's
journey to become certified. The proctor needs to be a person of high ethical
standing whose commitment to excellence and the science of entomology is above
reproach.
The proctor's job is that of monitor. They do not work for
ESA but have agreed to serve as our administrator. Essentially the proctor
receives the instructions for the examination on behalf of the applicant,
provides the computer and internet line for the applicant's exam, and ensures
that the applicant abides by the guidelines for taking the examination.
The Certification Board has set the following guidelines for
selecting a proctor for ACE examinations.
1)
Ideally the proctor would be a Board Certified Entomologist. (Click here to see the
roster).
2)
If no BCE is available within the applicant's geographic region, then a
member of the Entomological Society of America who is in good standing would
also be a good candidate.
3)
If the applicant does not live or work near a BCE or an ESA member, then
a college professor, extension agent, or some other “community leader” would be
acceptable in such a circumstance.
4)
At this point in time, the Certification Board is not willing to accept
another ACE as a proctor.
Other factors that you may want to consider in selecting a
proctor are to ensure that:
- The computer at the proctor's location has a reliable
internet connection. The online examinations are optimized for Internet
Explorer version 5.0 and higher,
- The location provided by the proctor is one that you can
access conveniently, and
- The location provided by the proctor does not offer
extraneous distractions that would inconvenience you during your
examination.
If you have trouble locating a proctor, please contact
bce@entsoc.org and one will be chosen for you.
