Forest Entomologist - West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA) – Performs professional level work in the planning, development and execution of forest insect detection, survey and control projects on state and privately owned lands and also plays a support role in the WVDA Pest Identification Laboratory.  Minimum of a four-year degree with a major in entomology or forestry. Individuals with a degree in forestry must also have at least a minor in entomology, i.e. 12 semester hours, or the equivalent, of entomology courses bearing an entomological title other than research or seminars. INTERDISCIPLINARY: RESEARCH PHYSIOLOGIST / RESEARCH ENTOMOLOGIST – Plant Sciences Institute, Bee Research Laboratory, Beltsville, MD – The USDA Agricultural Research Service’s (ARS) is seeking a highly qualified Research Physiologist/Research Entomologist at the GS-12/13 grade level for a permanent full-time position. Salary is commensurate with experience and can range between $69,764 to $107,854 per annum. The incumbent will join a team of scientist devoted to improving honey bee health and survivorship. Responsibilities include maintaining and enhancing the research effort on germplasm preservation of honey bees as well as developing active research to find novel means of preserving honey bee germplasm. The incumbent's specific research objectives are: (1) develop optimum methods for the in vitro preservation of honey bee embryos; (2) develop methods for the in vitro preservation of honey bee semen; (3) determine the biochemical and physiological environment that enables honey bee sperm to remain viable in queen spermathecae for years. To achieve these goals, the incumbent is expected to conduct research on germplasm preservation utilizing techniques that include: cryopreservation, ambient temperature storage, artificial insemination, in vitro rearing, proteomic and genomic analysis, and subtractive cDNA libraries.

Assistant Professor
– Join a dynamic program that is focusing on the development of system-level, ecologically-based solutions to problems in horticultural crop production and management. Plan, implement, synthesize, and teach applied research and Extension in integrated management of arthropod pests of perennial crops in western Oregon with an emphasis on wine grapes, hazelnuts, and berry crops. Chemical Ecology of Emerald Ash Borer – The successful applicant will take a leading role in a joint research project with Dr. Therese Poland (USDA Forest Service) and Dr. Jim Miller (Michigan State University) investigating the chemical ecology of the emerald ash borer (EAB, Agrilus planipennis, Coleoptera: Buprestidae). EAB is native to Asia and was discovered in 2002 causing widespread mortality of ash trees in southeastern Michigan. The project will explore the volatiles of ash trees and the role of chemical ecology in host and mate finding. Ultimately, the results of the research will lead to the development of traps and attractants for detection, monitoring, and control of EAB. Graduate Research Assistantship, Ph.D.
– Investigate the compatibility of IPM and IRM phil. for protecting the yield potential and durability of transgenic Bt corn. Research will investigate a model system where transgenic corn expressing the CrylF protein against western bean cutworm, Striacosta albicosta, is good but incomplete, and an economic threshold based on grain yield and/or quality likely still exists when pest pressure is high. This system will serve as a basis for the development of a simulation mode used to investigate how the use of IPM practices in Bt crops may impact the durability of Bt efficacy. Rice Professorship in Systematic Entomology
– Applications are invited for the Rice Professorship in Systematic Entomology. This is a full-time, 9-month tenured position at the Full Professor level in the Department of Zoology. The holder of the chair is expected to be a midcareer to senior scholar with an international reputation for scholarship and a distinguished record of funding, publication, and teaching in systematic entomology. The Rice Professor will participate in teaching, graduate education, and serve as Director of the Oregon State Arthropod Collection (OSAC), a major research collection with 3 million specimens. The appointment also includes annual discretionary funds of approximately $100,000 to support the research and teaching programs of the Rice Professor, with approximately one-third to be spent in support of the functions of the OSAC. It is expected that the Rice Professor will continue to be a productive scholar and teacher, participate fully in departmental affairs, contribute to the study of systematic entomology at Oregon State University, and take a leadership role in the local systematics community.
