Dr. Natalie Hummel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Entomology at Louisiana State University AgCenter in Baton Rouge, LA. Prior to her appointment at LSU AgCenter, Natalie received her Ph.D. in Entomology at UC Davis (2005) and worked as a post-doctoral scientist at the USDA-ARS Knipling Bushland Livestock Insect Research laboratory in Kerrville, TX (2005 to 2007). Natalie is currently responsible for the development and delivery of integrated pest management programs for rice, sugarcane, fruit and nut crop production in Louisiana. The LSU AgCenter rice extension program has successfully demonstrated the efficacy of seed treatments for rice water weevil control through a multi-year on-farm demonstration program. As a result, these seedtreatments have been rapidly adopted by the rice industry, resulting in an improved environmental profile for Louisiana rice production. Within the last couple of years, Natalie’s program has partnered with information technology specialists to create a variety of online resources - interactive insect identification guides (www.lsuagcenter.com/ricepest guide), a blog, and social media to speed delivery of information to stakeholders. The rice program is currently developing a multi-disciplinary mobile application, “RiceScout”, to speed diagnosis of rice crop issues (arthropods, diseases, weeds, and nutritional deficiencies).
