Developing an understanding of the roles of plants, vertebrates, and insects in agro-ecosystems is at the core of my polytechnic education.  This hands-on background in agriculture and environmental plant science, paired with a concentration in plant protection science, has given me a unique skill set that incorporates a firm foundation in how agricultural systems are managed through integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. Through this education, I have become intrigued by the use of biological controls (bio-controls) on agricultural pests.  It is, therefore, my professional aspiration to conduct applied research to add to the body of knowledge regarding the use of bio-controls in IPM strategies.

I am currently seeking gradaute student positions to obtain a M.S. degree in entomology, with a sincere interest in continuation of my studies through a Ph.D.  Through this experience, I will continue developing my understanding of entomology and increase my professional and research skill sets in the use of bio-controls within production environments.  Ultimately, my pursuit of a graduate degree will enable me to study the use of bio-controls as a part of IPM strategies by working as a researcher for a university, extension, or USDA–ARS.

The trajectory toward my academic and professional goals has been furthered through my research experience.  For nearly two years, I have worked as the lead research technician for Dr. Lauren Garner at Cal Poly, investigating the use of an experimental plant growth regulator, synthetic abscisic acid, on nursery plants to reduce drought stress in post-production environments.  I have been responsible for experimental planning, data collection and analysis, and am currently working with Dr. Garner to coauthor a peer reviewed manuscript.  I am also currently working as a research technician for Dr. David Headrick at Cal Poly, examining the biology and behavior of the bio-control Cryptolaemus montrouzieri in the control of Planococcus ficus. Additionally, I am currently teaching a lab section for Plant Protection Science 110 – People, Pests, and Plagues (entomology for non-science majors).  This position includes instruction in insect identification, collection, curation, biology, ecology, and human interactions in addition to testing, evaluating, and assigning grades to students.

My academic and professional background demonstrates a concerted effort to pursue a career in agricultural entomology research.  It is at a land grant institution that I wish to continue to move forward with this path through the study of the use of bio-controls in agricultural settings.  By continuing research in this area I will build a scientific understanding that will allow me to make significant contributions to entomological and agricultural science and the understanding of the roll of bio-controls in IPM programs.
