More than 30 years research experience on Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) and arbovirus transmission at the ARC-Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute. This includes geographical and seasonal distribution and abundance studies of the vector and the virus (e.g. African horse sickness, bluetongue, epizootic hemorrhagic and equine encephalosis) as well as vector competence and vector capacity studies on the most dominant Culicoides species in South Africa.

For one year I assist in the monitoring of Tsetse species in Zululand.

For the last 30 years I was also involved in disease vector biosystematics i.e. the routine identification of flies of veterinary importance, lice and fleas.

Since 2010 I am a member of the of the editorial board of the ISRN Veterinary Science Journal. During the last 8 years I refereed several scientific articles and project proposals for national and international journals (e.g. Medical and Veterinary Entomology, Veterinary Parasitology, Nature Reviews Microbiology, Onderstepoort Journal of Veterinary Science, South African Veterinary Journal, PLoS ONE, Parasites and Vectors, Epidemiology and Infection, Veterinary Record, Bulletin of Entomological Research, Veterinary Research) and/or funding bodies (e.g. Scottish Hospital Endowments Research Trust).
