Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR), Department of Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences (PEPS), located at the Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park Quarantine Facility in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $3,222/Mon.
DUTIES: In a collaborative USDA/University of Hawai‘i project, works on biological control in Hawai‘i. Conducts host range testing in quarantine of prospective biological control agents of the Coffee Berry Borer, Hypothenemus hampei in Hawai‘i. Collects native and invasive beetles in remote locations for testing and devise methods to raise them in laboratory cultures. Analyses data, publishes results in peer-reviewed journals. Collaborates with peers addressing the overall biological control project for Coffee Berry Borer.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: PhD from an accredited college or university in Entomology, Zoology, or a related field. EXPERIENCE: Up to one (0-1) year of experience in insect rearing, host range testing, and insect biology. Prior experience collecting and analyzing data and publishing results. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of the principals and practice of biological control. Ability to conduct field and laboratory studies with parasitoids and hosts. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to conduct field work under sometimes difficult field conditions (e.g. high elevations, densely vegetated areas, and high ambient temperatures).
