Lanham, Md., November 24, 2003 -- The Entomological Society of America (ESA) is pleased to announce its officers for 2003-2004. The new leadership assumed their responsibilities at the conclusion of the Society's final business meeting, held on October 22, during the 51st ESA Annual Meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio.
New President Kevin L. Steffey is an extension specialist and professor of agricultural entomology in the Department of Crop Sciences at the University of Illinois. He received his B.S. from Purdue University (1972), his M.S. from the University of Missouri (1975), and his Ph.D. in entomology from Iowa State University (1979). An active ESA member since, Steffey has held many leadership roles, specifically as an elected member of the ESA Governing (1990-93), co-chair of the 2000 annual meeting program committee, and chair of Subsection Ea, one of ESA's membership groupings by area of study (1992-93). He also has been a contributing editor for American Entomologist, a coordinating editor for ESA's Handbook of Corn Insects, an editorial board representative for the Journal of Economic Entomology.
Other 2003-2004 officials include: Vice President Michael A. Ivie of Montana State University; Vice President-Elect Frank E. Gilstrap of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station; Past President Z B Mayo, Jr., of the University of Nebraska; and Secretary-Treasurer Linda J. Mason.
The other members of the ESA Governing Board are: Elizabeth F. Beckemeyer, Wayne A. Gardner, George C. Hamilton, Marvin K. Harris, Scott H. Hutchins, Shripat T. Kamble, Gail E. Kampmeier, Jacqueline Miller, Marlin E. Rice, John D. Stark, and ESA Executive Director Paula G. Lettice (as a non-voting member).
Founded in 1889, ESA is a non-profit organization committed to serving the scientific and professional needs of approximately 5,500 entomologists and individuals in related disciplines. ESA's membership includes representatives from educational institutions, government, health agencies, and private industry.
