ESA Copyright and Permissions Policies

Except for materials prepared as a result of employment by the U.S. Government and Canadian Government, all material published by ESA is copyrighted and protected under U.S. copyright law. Under the Copyright Act of 1976, the term of copyright for materials registered by an organization is 75 years from the date of first publication. Before publishing any manuscript, ESA requires authors to complete a copyright transfer form as part of the ESA Publishing Agreement. Authors of materials published by ESA must transfer full and complete ownership of any copyright to ESA. ESA then registers the copyright.

Materials published by ESA may not be published elsewhere without prior written consent of ESA. Requests for permission to reproduce published materials should state where and how the material will be used. Requests should be addressed to:

pubs@entsoc.org

or

Director of Publications
Entomological Society of America
3 Park Place, Suite 307
Annapolis, MD 21401-3722

Depending on the nature of the permission or reuse desired, the requestor may be referred to the Copyright Clearance Center where fees may apply.

Permission to photocopy journal articles for internal or personal use is possible without applying directly to ESA for permission. All ESA journals are listed with the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC). Individuals who wish to make a limited number of copies may do so provided a fee is paid directly to CCC. The fee is listed in the CCC code that appears at the bottom of the first page of every copyrighted article. The fee and a copy of the page on which the code appears should be faxed or mailed to:

Copyright Clearance Center
222 Rosewood Drive
Danvers, MA 01923
Fax: 978-750-4470

Individuals may make one copy for personal use without permission and without charge. This consent does not extend to other kinds of copying, such as that for general distribution, for advertising or promotional purposes, for creating new collective works, or for resale. The fee is listed in the CCC code that appears at the bottom of the first page of every copyrighted article.

Authors may post electronic reprints of their own journal articles after an embargo period of one year has passed from the date of publication. Also, authors must include on the electronic reprint the following statement:

This article is the copyright property of the Entomological Society of America and may not be used for any commercial or other private purpose without specific written permission of the Entomological Society of America.
