Entomological Society Offers Travel Grants for 2004 International Congress of Entomology

Lanham, Md., October 21, 2003 -- The Entomological Society of America is proud to offer travel grants for junior scientists to attend the XXII International Congress of Entomology (ICE) to be held August 15-21, 2004, in Brisbane, Australia. These 21 grants of up to $2,300 each are available through funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Recipients can be reimbursed for up to $2,000 in travel expenses and may also receive a $300 stipend for early registration. ICE's early registration rates expire on February 1, 2004; please see the ICE web site for details, http://www.ccm.com.au/icoe/delegate_fees/default.htm.

The following criteria will be used for ESA's travel grants:

  • Junior scientists are defined as graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, or assistant professors (less than three years in rank).
  • U.S. citizens and U.S. residents are eligible to apply.
  • Foreign students studying at U.S. accredited, degree-granting institutions and foreign scientists working at a U.S. institution or for an American company (located either in the United States or abroad) are eligible.
  • Federal employees will be asked to demonstrate that federal travel funds are not available to attend the Congress.
  • Persons from private industry will need to demonstrate that their attendance will benefit the scientific community in some broad sense.
  • Membership in ESA is not required.

A judging panel consisting of ESA officers will rank the applicants based on the extent of personal participation in ICE, the benefit of attendance to the professional work of the applicant, the benefit to entomology, and the significance of professional contacts anticipated.

All applications must be submitted by January 6, 2004, using the online application form. Please click the following link to proceed to the online application form at http://www.entsoc.org/ESA-Awards/ice/index.htm.

Founded in 1889, ESA is a non-profit organization committed to serving the scientific and professional needs of nearly 6,000 entomologists and individuals in related disciplines. ESA's membership includes representatives from educational institutions, government, health agencies, and private industry.
