Assistant Professor – Urban Entomology
The Department of Entomology & Plant Pathology at North Carolina State University invites applications for a 12-month tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level. This faculty position is located on the main campus in Raleigh, North Carolina, and has an extension and research appointment. The position carries responsibilities for generating and disseminating knowledge concerning the biology, ecology and management of arthropods and associated pests in and around structures in urban and rural settings.
The successful applicant will assume leadership of NC State’s extension, outreach and community engagement in the management of pests associated with human-built structures. A dedication to providing State-wide practical, science-based information on integrated and sustainable pest management is essential, as is an ability to work with a diverse range of colleagues and stakeholders, including the pest management industry, extension and state educators, pesticide manufacturers and formulators, state and federal regulators and the general public. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required for preparation and delivery of pertinent information to stakeholders. The incumbent will serve as leader of the Structural Pest Management Training and Research Facility ( which provides pest management professionals and other specialized groups with invaluable training opportunities in pest management.
The successful applicant will develop a recognized, externally-funded research program whose output will increase our understanding of various factors impacting household and structural pests, and the tools used for their control, with the overall goal to improve pest management programs and mitigate the harmful effects of indoor pests. An ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team that includes other entomologists, regulators, industry personnel, pathologists, economists, ecologists, and food safety specialists is required. Significant opportunities exist for collaboration with faculty in Urban Entomology, NC Agromedicine Institute, Center for Human Health and the Environment, and partnerships with corporations and government agencies, especially those in the Research Triangle Park or elsewhere in North Carolina. The incumbent is also expected to mentor graduate and undergraduate students and contribute to the university academic mission.
Minimum qualifications include a PhD in Entomology or field of study directly related to the position description. A demonstrated record of collaborative research and scholarship, stakeholder engagement, and innovative approaches to pest management are preferred.
