Duties and Responsibilities
This is a 12-month tenure-accruing position that will be 60% research/40% extension (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station) in the Entomology and Nematology Department located at the Tropical Research and Education Center, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, University of Florida. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. The incumbent will be expected to develop successful research and extension programs with an emphasis on the integrated pest management practices for ornamental and landscape plants. The successful candidate will conduct a broad range of cooperative, problem-oriented, field and laboratory research projects in support of the tropical greenhouse and nursery industries of South Florida. The candidate is expected to work on some of the most critical pest problems plaguing Florida’s ornamental industry today, such as the hibiscus bud weevil and the horntail snail. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research on emerging acarine pests such as pesticide resistant spider mites, eriophyid and flat mites, that cause direct damage, vector pathogens, or induce plant malformations on various plants in nurseries, cultivated fields and in the landscape. Research should also include the development of methods for monitoring, detection and eradication of arthropods and other invertebrates of regulatory concern. In Extension, the incumbent will work with center, department, and county faculty to develop insect and mite management educational programs for statewide in-service training and lead educational programs for representatives of the ornamental and landscape industry.
Tenure will accrue in the Entomology and Nematology Department. The faculty member will participate actively in graduate and undergraduate education including supervising graduate research, chairing, and serving on graduate committees, overseeing thesis and dissertation research, and publishing the results with their graduate students. The faculty member will aggressively seek contract and grant funding to support their program. The incumbent must consistently publish scientific publications both in peer-reviewed journals and extension outlets related to their assigned duties. Faculty are expected to participate in professional development activities such as mentoring, grant writing and diversity training.
Required: Ph.D. (foreign equivalent acceptable) in Acarology or Entomology, with experience in integrated pest management, biological control, and mite or insect ecology and behavior. Experience working with arthropods of quarantine importance in containment facilities, is also desired. Competence in oral and written communication is necessary. Candidates must have aptitude, motivation, and personality necessary for cooperation with commercial customers, county extension personnel, staff, faculty, and statewide colleagues.
Preferred: Experience working on invasive pest mitigation and applied research, including rearing of regulated arthropods in containment facilities, is preferred. Familiarity with quarantine pests or arthropods of regulatory concern, including vectors of plant pathogens, and development of postharvest quarantine treatments, is desired.
The Tropical Research and Education Center (TREC) in Homestead is a branch of the University of Florida (http://www.ufl.edu), Institute for Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS; http://ifas.ufl.edu). TREC is a 160-acre center with office, laboratory, greenhouse, teaching, and field plot facilities. Currently, there are 17 faculty members located at the center. TREC is located in Miami-Dade County about 30 miles south of metropolitan Miami.
