The University of Nebraska-Lincoln invites nominations and applications for the position of dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR). The university is seeking an innovative, dynamic, and entrepreneurial individual who will provide intellectual and strategic leadership for the college.

 

Position Overview

The dean is a member of the senior leadership team of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) who routinely coordinates with leadership team colleagues, particularly IANR’s Senior Associate Vice Chancellor and the deans of the Agricultural Research Division (ARD) and Nebraska Extension. Provision of leadership and oversight of all academic programming in the IANR is expected in addition to facilitating the performative evolution of the IANR’s teaching and learning mission, while ensuring the relevance, quality, and impact of IANR efforts to prepare students for a changing world.

 

Position Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the dean include:

 

  • Advancing the development of a vision for the CASNR—with input from faculty, staff, and stakeholders—and ensuring the college’s resources are strategically deployed to realize that vision;
  • Providing leadership that will expand the CASNR’s local, national, and international visibility and academic reputation by engaging in, and leading, national groups and initiatives that define and drive the future directions of education about food, fuel, water, and landscapes;
  • Promoting an inclusive culture within the college, ensuring that opportunities are available to all and that every effort is made to engage diverse audiences, especially those that are traditionally underrepresented and/or underserved;
  • Identifying and prioritizing needed improvements in facilities and technology that will enhance teaching and learning and widening the reach of the college through programs offered in non-traditional ways and venues;
  • Promoting and generating global engagement opportunities for students, faculty members, and staff;
  • Serving as IANR’s liaison to the Offices of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs to ensure the rigor, relevance, and vitality of CASNR’s curriculum and to promote the success of its students;
  • Serving as IANR’s liaison to the Office of Graduate Studies to oversee both the integrity of graduate and postdoctoral education and the success and professional development of CASNR graduate and postdoctoral students by developing new pathways that recognize the changing and emerging career paths of those students;
  • Facilitating the recruitment, mentoring, retention, ongoing academic and personal development, and successful placement of students in all academic programs in the college and procuring financial support for undergraduate scholarships and fellowships for graduate and professional programs;
  • Overseeing the college’s commitment to both academic and co-curricular student success by coordinating CASNR student organizations and leading such initiatives as internships, education abroad, learning assessment, career services, living-learning communities, and programming and awards that incentivize and recognize student achievement;
  • Fostering faculty development efforts that focus on the improvement of teaching and learning, advising and mentoring, development and review of curricula, and learning outcomes assessment and leading the implementation of initiatives that reward effective teaching and advising;
  • Managing the CASNR’s annual budget to maximize the effectiveness of those resources, exhibiting fiscal discipline, using best fiscal management practices, and aligning resources with strategic directions;
  • Effectively managing personnel to accomplish strategic goals;
  • Actively promoting the engagement and stewardship of CASNR donors;
  • Providing counsel to the Vice Chancellor/Vice President for CASNR promotion and tenure cases, annual and reappointment reviews, and merit salary increases; and
  • Fostering relationships with college alumni, including providing opportunities for student-alumni interaction, to provide them with a sense of belonging and promote their continuing engagement with the college.
  • Actively seeking, forming, and nurturing linkages with UNL’s other colleges, centers, and institutes, the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture, Nebraska’s six community colleges and three state colleges, and Nebraska’s public school systems;
  • Pursuing other collaborations and partnerships, internal and external to the university, that strengthen or complement programs in the college;
  • Identifying experiential learning opportunities for students in Nebraska communities and promoting the development of credit and non-credit professional and continuing education programs and/or offerings;
  • Serving on university committees that support the overall operations of the institution; and
  • Serving as a compelling advocate and energetic spokesperson for the CASNR to faculty, staff, students within the university and to alumni, donors, and other friends of the college externally.

 

The dean reports to the Vice Chancellor for the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources/Vice President for Agriculture and Natural Resources. The dean will be appointed to a five-year renewable term, subject to annual reviews by the Vice Chancellor/Vice President and a satisfactory formal performance review.

 

To be considered for the position, candidates must have:

  • A doctoral degree in a field of study represented within the departments of CASNR.
  • A record of excellence in teaching (and/or extension), research, and scholarship commensurate with appointment in a CASNR unit at the rank of professor with tenure.
  • Administrative experience within higher education.

 

Preferred candidates will:

  • Be able to demonstrate that they are visionary leaders with proven skills in academic administration, resource management, and program formation and review.
  • Have an administrative record at an institution of higher education that demonstrates strong collaborative academic management experience, creative and strategic thinking, sound judgement, excellent analytical skills, and the ability and courage to make difficult but informed decisions.
  • Be able to demonstrate an abiding commitment to diversity and to practices that are inclusive of all forms of human diversity. The candidate should have demonstrated experience in mentoring members of underrepresented groups.
  • Show a commitment to and experience in supporting and cultivating an accomplished and diverse faculty. The passion for excellence and integrity must be paired with an ability to inspire and motivate.
  • Have experience with curriculum development and a commitment to excellence in both undergraduate and graduate education.
  • Be sensitive to the perspectives and values of faculty, staff, and students; have a commitment to shared governance; and possess the ability to collaborate effectively with a broad range of consistencies.
  • Experience with effective development and fundraising activities.
  • Have a distinguished record of success in obtaining external funding.

The Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources

 

Created by the Nebraska Legislature in 1973, the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) is composed of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR), the Agricultural Research Division (ARD), Nebraska Extension, and the ARD and Extension components of three departments in the College of Education and Human Sciences. Teaching is provided through the CASNR, research through the ARD, and extension education through statewide Nebraska Extension.
