Scientific Position: Entomologist
Salary Range: $53,433 to $84,049 per year

The incumbent is an Entomologist in the Pollinator Health in Southern Crop Ecosystem Research Unit (PHSCERU) and Southern Pollinators Health Center (HPSC) in Stoneville, Mississippi. The new Research Unit will focus on how to improve both honey bee and native bee health as well as improving natural habitat and minimizing risk to stressors including pesticides and pests in a way that is beneficial to both beekeepers and farmers. This position will provide exciting opportunities for professional growth while contributing to and shaping the future direction of this newly formed unit.
The incumbent is independently responsible for (1) Taking a leading role in honey beekeeping to support the research effort; (2) Managing honey bee yards and maintaining bee colonies as required to produce enough healthy (pest/disease-free) bees for supporting the unit bee research program; (3) Applying effective measures to control small hive beetle, wax moth, varroa mite, etc. that cause summer dying of honey bee colonies; (4) Maintaining detailed records of research and colony maintenance, including computer databases; (5) Reviewing scientific, statistical, and beekeeping literature and consults with specialists in the field for information relevant to the development and completion of specific research projects; (6) Maintaining equipment and instrumentation in top working condition, performing routine preventive maintenance and minor repairs, and promptly reporting signs of malfunction or need for major repairs; and (7) Preparing reports and manuscripts, including experimental design, results, and evaluation in the form suitable as the basis for the first draft of written reports to scientific journals.
