About: The Entomological Society of Washington presents Maria Sibylla Merian Naturalist and Illustrator ‘Par Excellence’ by Dr. Jeyaraney Kathirithamby, University of Oxford

Meet at 6 p.m., Constitution Ave. Lobby of NMNH for pre-meeting pizza dinner with speaker in the VZ-WG33; Refreshments served following the meeting.

Maria Sibylla was an extremely enterprising, independent woman, extraordinary artist and keen, observant natural historian, among the first to observe and illustrate the metamorphosis of insects and amphibians. Her elaborate drawings and observations made a lasting contribution to natural sciences and straddle the histories of science and art. In 1699 she sailed to Surinam to collect, record and draw unusual plants and live insects and other animals, culminating in the publication of Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium (1705).
