Welcome from the ESA Diversity and Inclusion Committee

The Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Committee would like to welcome everyone to the 2017 Annual Meeting of the Entomological Society of America (ESA)! Every year as we come together, all attendees, as well as the membership of our Society as a whole, embody a wonderfully diverse group of people. As we write this note, meeting registrants come from over 30 countries and 400 institutions, bringing many layers of diversity. With such diversity, the Society recognizes that the needs and interests of ESA members are also diverse. This is articulated in both the ESA Strategic Principle, “ESA has a social responsibility to develop all of its members,” and the ESA Outcome Statement “To increase the diversity and satisfaction of members and customers as well as the value provided to them.” As a result, the ESA Governing Board established the D&I Committee in 2015.

The D&I Committee seeks to increase the cultural competency of ESA members and proposes resources, programs, and services that will maximize support for diversity and inclusion of all members in ESA. One of the first tasks of the Committee was to formalize ESA’s Diversity and Inclusion Statement (included at the end of this page). Using cultural and demographic data collected by ESA headquarters and surveys of ESA members, the Committee has further developed four initial goals:

  1. Increase the overall diversity of speakers at ESA Annual and Branch meetings,
  2. Increase overall diversity of ESA volunteers and members in leadership roles,
  3. Increase the completion rate of ESA membership profile details, and
  4. Increase the Society’s awareness of the work the Committee is doing.

Last year we organized a D&I symposium, “Connecting with the World’s Best Talent: Attracting and Retaining Diverse Entomologists,” where speakers addressed D&I in ESA, the workplace, and across the sciences broadly. During this year’s meeting in Denver, we would like to invite everyone to the Diversity and Inclusion reception on Monday, 6 November from 5:30 to 6:30pm at the Hyatt Hotel’s Capitol Ballroom 1. This reception will be a place to continue the conversation and momentum around D&I in ESA as well as to encourage more members, presenters, and attendees to learn about the D&I goals and to get involved.

The Entomological Society of America (ESA) is a professional organization dedicated to furthering the science and awareness of entomology through the advancement and professional development of all its members.
