The Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at Oklahoma State University (OSU) invites applications and nominations of energetic and visionary individuals for the position of Professor Head of the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology. This 12-month tenured appointment is administratively responsible to the Vice President and Dean of OSU Agriculture.
The department consists of faculty, staff, post-doctoral scientists, and students, based on the OSU main campus in Stillwater. Faculty members conduct and lead nationally and internationally recognized research, EExtension, education, and development programs in fulfillment of the University’s land-grant mission. We offer programs leading to a B.S. degree in Entomology, M.S. degree in Entomology and Plant Pathology, and Ph.D. degree programs in Plant Pathology or Entomology. The undergraduate entomology program, with 70 students, is the second largest in the United States. Students in the B.S. program may specialize in insect biology and ecology, pre-medicine, pre-veterinary, or bioforensics. The department supports undergraduate general studies education programs and courses for students in the departments of Animal and Food Sciences, Plant and Soil Sciences, Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, and others. Facilities include the Institute for Biosecurity & Microbial Forensics, Pesticide Safety Education Program, Stored Products Research and Education Center, Plant Disease and Insect Diagnostic Lab, and the Insect Adventure. The department is committed to enhancing an excellent team of diverse faculty, staff, post-docs, and students, and promoting positive and inclusive work environments for all individuals. Teaching, research and Extension activities are accomplished by 23 faculty members, and 15 professional support personnel and clerical staff. - Provide visionary leadership in the department with attention to fairness and integrity, including periodic review of department objectives, scope and priorities.
- Stimulate, integrate, oversee, and evaluate departmental teaching, research and EExtension programs.
- Support OSU’s diversity efforts to recruit and retain outstanding faculty, staff and students.
- Effectively and efficiently manage human, financial and physical resources.
- Represent departmental and faculty interests to administrators and other University and Division units.
- Collaborate with Division Unit Heads and with other University administrators and faculty.
- Represent the department to outside agencies (state and federal agencies, agricultural industries, and professional organizations), alumni, individuals, the community and other stakeholders.
- Pursue external funding to include competitive grants, research contracts, gifts and other special funding to include endowments for scholarships, fellowships and chairs and professorships.
- Assign responsibilities to faculty and staff and evaluate their performance. Encourage professional growth and development of faculty, staff and students.
- Provide oversight and promotion of departmental activities in state, regional, national, and international organizations and committees.
- Foster an environment of collegiality, teamwork, diversity and respect for multi-disciplinary and multicultural settings.
- An earned doctoral degree in Entomology, Plant Pathology, or a closely related discipline.
- An outstanding record of scholarly achievements and professional activities related to teaching, research and/or Extension that will qualify for the rank of Professor with tenure.
- A thorough understanding of the land-grant mission.
- Evidence of administrative ability to direct a department, team or unit and provide visionary and progressive leadership.
- Ability to effectively listen, communicate and represent the department with administrators, agencies, and on-and off-campus interest groups.
- Ability to foster professional development, assign responsibilities and evaluate performance of faculty and staff.
This position is to be filled by January 1, 2022, or as soon thereafter as the successful candidate is available. This is a 12-month administrative appointment with tenure as a Professor within the department. Salary is commensurate with qualifications. Continuation of this position is subject to performance and need.
