Pesticide Safety Education Program Coordinator
The Department of Agronomy and Horticulture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is seeking a Pesticide Safety Education Program Coordinator. The Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP) Coordinator will contribute to the integrated extension, research, and teaching land-grant Mission of IANR as an effective scholar and citizen, including supporting student recruitment and IANR science literacy. This is a 12-month, non-tenure track position within the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture. The individual in this position will serve as the PSEP Coordinator for the state of Nebraska.
1. Serve as a representative of Nebraska Extension and assume responsibility for planning, marketing, conducting, and evaluating pesticide safety education and chemigation programs. Program emphasis will reflect the educational mission of Nebraska Extension. Programs will be clientele based and will produce scholarly outcomes to educate stakeholders on all pesticide related topics.
2. Responsible for developing and maintaining pesticide safety education programs for in-person and online delivery for academic credit, non-credit, certificates, and/or recertification purposes. These programs shall contribute to IANR science literacy programming, as appropriate.
3. Assess the impact of PSEP and chemigation program efforts in team or individual effort and report these impacts to Nebraska Extension, the home administrative unit, community and public leaders, the general public, and peers at conferences and meetings.
4. Assess the needs and program content and assign priority to programs and adjust accordingly. Inform clientele about the status of these programs. Commit time and other resources according to highest priorities.
5. Function as an effective team member in the state. Cooperate with other faculty and staff involved in pesticide application decision support, Extension zone coordinators, other extension personnel, and industry cooperators to coordinate programming. Promote effective working relationships and facilitate teamwork among cooperators.
6. Maintain working/team relationships with USDA agencies, the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy, the US Environmental Protection Agency, educational partners, community organizations, and with business and citizen committees that provide program guidance, linkages and evaluation.
7. Work with PSEP staff, cooperating departments, and Nebraska Extension in planning, marketing, and delivering a public relations plan.
8. Participate in professional development activities to increase teaching skills, knowledge of subject matter areas, and interpersonal and team skills. As public needs change, re-train and re-assign to new subject matter responsibilities.
9. Develop grant proposals and solicit external funding for partial or complete support of programming efforts.
10. Contribute to creating and maintaining a positive, professional image for Nebraska Extension, the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
11. Support departmental efforts to recruit potential students for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
12. Assume other duties and responsibilities in support of Nebraska Extension and IANR as assigned by appropriate administrators.
Develop and maintain a comprehensive statewide educational program of excellence in pesticide safety education. Provide strong leadership in assessing, planning, developing, marketing, implementing, evaluating and reporting results of effective educational programs focused on pesticide safety, chemigation, and related areas. Partner with the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy, and other educational, service, and regulatory agencies. Actively participate in all appropriate Innovation Hubs, Initiatives, and Extension Issue Teams and interest groups. Promote effective working relationships and conditions within the Pesticide Safety Education Office and pesticide registration staff, which facilitates teamwork and increases effort and satisfaction of staff. Prepare annual budgets, manage and provide accountability of financial operations for the PSEP.
Responsible for effective management of the pesticide education office, including:
• Arrangement of space.
• Purchase of supplies.
• Selection, supervision, evaluation and training of staff.
• General appearance and image portrayed by the office and staff to the public.
• Maintenance of office files and records.
As appropriate to the appointment, the incumbent will: develop a high-impact, nationally recognized extension program in pesticide safety education and chemigation; seek and establish effective disciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations, including effective integration with relevant research groups, extension teams, and/or educational programs; connect with stakeholders, agency, and/or industry partners to strengthen extension programming; effectively obtain and leverage external and internal support (grants, fee revenue, etc.) for extension activities; publish in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals where appropriate, and participate in scientific meetings and other appropriate professional activities; and translate research-based information into learner-centered products. This includes: creating scholarly, innovative, and high impact learning programs and tools; identifying issues and opportunities focused on learner needs and emerging regional and national issues with international relevance; measuring the impact of your programs and communicating results to administrators, stakeholders, users, and media; and mentoring colleagues through professional development, grants, and professional writing.
In addition to the above-described duties, the individual will be expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and/or university level.
Required qualifications for this position:
• Master of Science in agronomy or other applicable agricultural or plant science discipline.
• Demonstrated ability to manage office personnel and budgets.
• Demonstrated ability to develop an Extension/outreach program designed to aid stakeholders in making decisions.
• Demonstrated ability to work on interdisciplinary collaborative teams.
• Demonstrated experience teaching pesticide safety or practical experience/knowledge of pesticide delivery systems.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and engage stakeholders in innovative exchanges of information.
• Demonstrated experience evaluating educational program impact.
• Ability to adapt quickly to changing regulations and educational technologies.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Preferred qualifications include:
• Five years or more experience in extension/outreach.
• Experience in producing educational materials using multi-media, including online education.
• Demonstrated ability to translate complex regulatory concepts into common language and easily understood information.
