About ESA P-IE Pollinator Initiative:
In November 2015, the ESA P-IE leadership team declared that pollinators and related issues would be a specific technical initiative on which to lead an internal and public education effort. The issue around pollinators affects nearly all of the approximately 2,500 P-IE section members, many of whom have a technical background and practical understanding of pollinator biology and management. A goal of the P-IE Pollinator Initiative is to provide technical educational materials to members and to leverage this knowledge to the general public, media, policymakers, and other key stakeholders. The ultimate goal is for P-IE to become a lead national expert organization for the dissemination of such knowledge to the general public, media, and policymakers by the end of the decade. As part of this initiative, the P-IE section sponsored a field tour in 2017 for participants to get a first-hand look at IPM and pollinator health in Mississippi. The tour had participants from 22 states and the District of Columbia representing federal and state public science agencies, non-governmental organizations, beekeeping organizations, and crop protection and commodity groups.
About the Honey Bee Health Coalition:
The Honey Bee Health Coalition (www.honeybeehealthcoalition.org) brings together beekeepers, growers, researchers, government agencies, agribusinesses, conservation groups, and consumer brands to improve the health of honey bees in general and specifically around production agriculture. The Coalition is taking collaborative action to improve honey bee health by addressing multiple factors influencing bee health, including hive pests and disease, forage and nutrition, and exposure to crop pesticides. Through its Bee Integrated Demonstration project, the Coalition brings together beekeepers and producers to show how a suite of best practices can be implemented together in agricultural landscapes to support honey bee health. The multi-year project in North Dakota includes establishing pollinator forage, managing Varroa mites, following pollinator protection plans, and utilizing best practices for crop pesticides.
