Postdoctoral associate position in postharvest fumigation
12 month appointment with potential to extend upon successful performance to conduct research at the US Pacific Basin Agricultural Research Laboratory, USDA-ARS, Hilo, HI. Actual appointment will be through University of Hawaii.

This post represents an exciting opportunity for a well-motivated individual to join our team to develop and implement effective postharvest programs for quarantine pests of fruit and ornamental crops.
We seek to hire a postdoctoral associate to develop postharvest fumigation treatments for oriental fruit fly, pineapple mealybug, and melon thrips that are serious trade barriers of tropical fruits and ornamental crops. Initial focus will be on using ethyl formate and phosphine. The successful candidate will take a lead role in designing and conducting fumigation experiments and quality evaluation trials with the help from supporting staffs for insect rearing and sample preparation. There will be opportunities to develop independent and collaborative research. The candidate will work closely with the PIs on three different grants.
The position requires a PhD in entomology, chemistry, or related discipline with expertise in fumigation, quality evaluation, postharvest disinfestation, and/or systems approach as well as conducting scale-up confirmatory fumigation experiments on research or commercial facilities. Candidates should have strong interpersonal and communication skills, excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. There is no citizenship requirement for this position.
