Duties: Coordinate a project on biological control of twospotted spider mites in field-grown staked tomatoes using Phytoseiulus persimilis. The project focuses on using modified banker plant systems to promote early season buildup of P. persimilis in tomato fields, and quantifying impacts on spider mite populations, acaricide use, economics of staked tomato production, and TSSM acaricide resistance. The project also offers the opportunity to gain Extension experience by working directly with growers, extension agents and the crop protection industry in on-farm studies and educational programs. The incumbent will be expected to publish in peer-reviewed journals, present results of the project at scientific and grower/commodity meetings, prepare project reports, and supervise technical staff and student workers.
Location: The position is located at NC State University’s Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center (MHCREC), Mills River, NC. MHCREC is located approximately 10 miles from Asheville, NC, and houses over 50 faculty and staff from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in Entomology or closely related field, and experience conducting applied field research. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with a diversity of audiences, and to work independently as well as in a team atmosphere.
Salary: $49,000 per year plus university postdoctoral benefits.
