Report From the September 2019 ESA Governing Board Meeting
October 8, 2019
The ESA Governing Board meets four times per year to discuss strategic initiatives, oversee the work of staff and volunteers, and advance new ideas to benefit the Society. A summary of activities is published after each meeting to inform members about board activities and decisions.
The ESA Governing Board met via conference call on September 12. The meeting began with an executive session to discuss the executive transition following the departure of David Gammel, FASAE, CAE, who is leaving ESA Nov. 30. As announced on September 24, the board voted to select ESA Director of Strategic Initiatives Chris Stelzig, CAE, as Gammel’s successor.
Following the executive session, the board heard updates on ESA’s mid-year financial position, plans for a Grand Challenges Agenda for Entomology summit on ISPM15 to be held in conjunction with Entomology 2020, and next steps to follow up on ESA’s 2019 Innovation Day. The board also discussed questions raised by members regarding diversity among ESA award winners and progress toward establishing the new ESA Committee on Awards and Honors Canvassing.
The board took the following actions:
- Approved a position statement on the importance of continued innovation in gene drive technology.
- Approved the reappointment of Journal of Insect Science Editorin-Chief Phyllis Weintraub to a second and final term.
- Approved two new ESA common names.
The ESA Governing Board also convened as the ESA Certification Corporation Governing Board and heard an update on the forthcoming public health entomology certificate program.
