Research Entomologist, Biological Control, Tree Fruits
The USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Temperate Tree Fruit & Vegetable Research Unit located in Wapato, WA, is seeking a full time, permanent, Research Entomologist. The salary for this position is at the GS-12/13 level, $73,375.00 - $113,428.00 per year. The mission of this Unit is to develop and improve sustainable and biorational management and quarantine security of insect pests of temperate tree fruit crops. This position will focus on the use of biological control to reduce pesticide use and improve pest management in tree fruit crops.
As a member of an interdisciplinary team of scientists, the incumbent will:
Conduct research leading to new or improved use of biological control methods for primary and secondary arthropod pests in temperate tree fruits.
Collaborate with scientists and industry stakeholders in adapting biological control approaches to continuously evolving orchard IPM programs.
Conceive, plan, and implement research in biological control that will lead to more sustainable IPM programs in orchards, and communicate results in peer-reviewed scientific journals, at scientific conferences, and to national and regional stakeholders.
Develop basic and applied research programs leading to improved understanding of the ecology, phenology, behavior, and physiology of biological control agents.
Use applied augmentative and conservation biological control approaches to control tree fruit pests, while providing technical expertise and leadership to the national tree fruit industry in non-chemical control of arthropod pests.
Incorporate multidisciplinary research tools or approaches as needed to advance the research program, including any of the following: molecular and genetic tools; chemical ecology; landscape approaches; and population modeling.
