Research Scientist 2 - Pesticide Registration

Salary Range: $25.22 - $37.16/hourly; $52,659 - $77,590/annually

 

Job Summary

 

This position will be responsible for planning and directing special pesticide reviews with staff within and outside the agency. This coordination includes: 1) tracking and researching scientific and regulatory pesticide issues related to environmental and human health and pesticide contaminants of emerging concern; 2) coordinating a high level scientific research team involving multiple agencies in conducting a special registration review of pesticide products; 3) preparing recommendations of the MDA's decisions and informing interested parties of the specifics of MDA's options, considerations and decisions; 4) assisting in the development and coordination of post-review communications, planning and outreach activities; 5) assisting in investigating the pesticide related bee kill incidences and 6) representing the State of Minnesota and MDA in interviews with the media contacts related to review of activities needed. Work is frequently conducted in conjunction with PhD and Masters level staff of the Minnesota Department of Health, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, University of Minnesota Extension, EPA, registrants and other key information providers.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

A Master's degree in an Agricultural or Environmental Sciences field such as Weed Science, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Water Resources Management, Agronomy, Soil Science, Crop Soil and Pest Management, Applied Plant science or related field.

 

Three (3) years of practical research experience conducting research or evaluating and interpreting research data on pesticides or working with the development of environmental or health standards.

 

Specialized knowledge of pesticide practices used on corn and soybeans in Minnesota or comparable conditions.

 

Excellent writing skills.

 

Excellent communication skills in order to interact with a variety of audiences including growers, Ag groups, PhD level researchers and media contacts.

 

Must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable motor vehicle record subject to review.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

A PhD in an Agricultural or Environmental Sciences field such as Weed Science, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Water Resources Management, Agronomy, Soil Science, Crop Soil and Pest Management, Applied Plant science or related field.

 

More than three (3) years of practical research experience conducting research or evaluating and interpreting research data on pesticides or working with the development of environmental or health standards.

 

Strong leadership skills.

 

Technical knowledge in pesticide product technology, pesticide toxicology, risk assessment and environmental and health standards development.

 

Knowledge in integrated pest management, hydrology, monitoring design and statistics and environmental health.

 

Knowledge of honey bees and pollinators.

 

Established history of authoring and publishing scientific reports and journal articles.
