Invitation to Participate in the 2012 Student Debates
April 5, 2012
Dear ESA Student Members,
The ESA Student Affairs Committee has been organizing the Student Debates at the Annual Meeting every year. The debates have become increasingly popular over the last few years, with more attendance and recognition. Last year was the first overall best debate awards and we want to keep participation in this event strong. All students participating in the debates are considered "invited speakers," and winning teams will be recognized with a plaque and certificates for the team members. The debate will be submitted for peer reviewed publication in the American Entomologist. The debates are hence not only fun, but also professionally rewarding.
Teams are invited to participate in the Student Debates at this year’s Annual Meeting in Knoxville, TN. We are trying an exciting new format, where teams will have more choice in the position they are debating and we are focusing on solving global issues that face society and science. There will be three specific debates. In total, there will be opportunities for nine (9) student teams. The teams will be selected on a first-come-first-served basis. Each team will randomly be assigned to one of the three specific topics, and will be asked to debate, or to present an unbiased introduction of the topic.

If you are interested, please contact the student debate committee at email@example.com as soon as possible. In order to reserve a slot for your team, send a list of 4-5 team members, including a designated team leader (or spokesperson) and a faculty advisor (include names and email addresses). All communications between debate organizers and the teams will go through the designated team leaders and must be sent through the debate email.
Grab this opportunity to be part of one of ESA's flagship student events.
We are looking forward to hearing from you.
