The SysEB Student Research Endowment is a permanent ESA endowment that provides research-enhancement awards for graduate and undergraduate students who are members in good standing of the Systematics, Evolution, and Biodiversity (SysEB) Section of the Entomological Society of America (ESA).

How was the endowment established?

The fund was initiated with a generous contribution from Tom Rogers in response to a call for establishing a student research endowment. Subsequent contributions to the fund have come primarily from members of the Entomological Society of America, the Entomological Collections Network, the Coleopterist’s Society, and from anonymous donors.

How is the endowment maintained?

The endowment is maintained as a permanently-restricted fund (all contributions build the permanent endowment; awards are made solely from earnings) and is managed as part of the central reserve fund of the Entomological Society of America under the oversight of the ESA Governing Board. Earnings from the fund are made available on a regular basis to SysEB Section leaders to be used in accordance with the intent of the fund to support SysEB student research. In 2015, the corpus of the endowment surpassed $50,000.

How are awards made from the endowment?

Awards are made annually through a competitive, proposal-based, process managed by the SysEB Section of ESA. Because the endowment is managed as a permanently-restricted fund, the total value of awards is constrained by the earnings on the endowment. The number and value of individual awards is determined each year by the SysEB leadership. For more information, visit the SysEB Student Research Travel Award page.

How can I help?

To help develop the potential of SysEB students, we need your assistance. The SysEB Student Research Endowment is dedicated to supporting unique research opportunities for students – opportunities that can transform their research, their perspectives, and their lives. By contributing to the endowment you will be helping our community build a permanent source of funding to support student research. We are building for the future, please give generously. As a non-profit organization, contributions to the ESA are generally tax deductible.
