Minutes from the Section B Business Meetings

2002 Final Business Meeting, Fort Lauderdale, Florida

November 20, 2002

Richard Mankin called the meeting to order at 5:05 p.m. He asked new members to introduce themselves. These were Walter Leal from UC Davis and Ian Scott from Ottawa.

Reports from Section B Representatives

International Congress of Entomology
Lynn Riddiford discussed certificates of distinction to be given at the International Congress of Entomology (ICE). The sheet is on the website for nominations, which are needed. Deadline is August 1st, 2003. In Florence, Italy, only one was given to Ed Wilson. In Brazil, the award was given to Michael Locke and Gene Robinson. The winner is given a certificate and gives a lecture to the section (not a plenary lecture). Sonny nominated Lynn Riddiford.

Susan Weller from Section A is writing a travel grant proposal for young investigators, 25 awards each for $2,500. Susan wants a Section B committee to review applications. Announcement will be in June. Deadline July 31, 2003. In mid-August applications will be evaluated. Sonny suggested Section B awards committee can do this. Riddiford said she will have to appoint somebody else to chair.

Governing Board
Dale Gelman introduced Paula Lettice (ESA Executive Director) and reported good news: In 2001 ESA had surplus of $18,000; 2002 surplus $130,000 is expected; and in 2003 another $130,000 is expected. All of this will go to build up a reserve. Other news from Dale:

Meeting rates will be the same for early reservations for members and guests. Late registration will increase from 11% to 20%, depending on member/non-member.

Next year's effort is to have computer projectors in all meeting rooms, also for 10 minute papers. Volunteers may be needed to provide additional projectors.

The 2003 meeting is in Cincinnati, a great convention city. It has a great insect zoo, good facilities, hub airport, expecting a good turnout. Theme is "From Many Disciplines: A Great Science."

Dale presented the Nominations for Standing Committees, which follow.

§         Section B Nominations for Standing Committees:

§         Strategic Planning: Tom Coudron

§         At-Large for Membership: Nancy Beckage

§         At-Large for International Affairs: Florence Dunkel

§         At-Large for Strategic Planning: Nancy Beckage

Dale encouraged Section B members to volunteer for other standing committees. Need is greater than ever due to reduced Lanham staff. Florence Dunkel motioned for Section B to thank Dale Gelman (who rotates off GB) for her service: Applause!

Committee on Finance
Jeff Shapiro talked about plans to increase reserves and savings and repeated Dale's comment that the society is in better shape than last year. ESA staff was cut by 2/3, yielding big dividends (about $130K). He praised Paula Lettice's efforts.

Thomas Say Publications
Bernard Philogene, who steps down this year, said that only monographs are published and the fund is depleted. The time lag between submission of manuscripts and publication is terrible. Because these are usually systematics monographs, it was suggested that there be two Section A representatives and specialists as needed from other sections. This was not received favorably by the Publications Council. Also, it would require a by-laws change.

Section B Symposium Committee
Sonny Ramaswamy reported the following symposia had been submitted:

§         Walter Leal: Pheromone Processing

§         Dave Carlson: Mosquito Olfaction

§         Yoonseong Park: Insect Neuropeptides

§         Ann Fallon: Genomics and Proteomics

§         Richard Musser: Insect Saliva

§         Florence Dunkel: Nutritional Consequences of Insectivory (by humans)

Dale Gelman moved that Human Insectivory be selected for submission as a Program Symposium; Gary Blomquist seconded; motion carried. Peter Dunn moved that Proteomics and Genomics be submitted as Section B symposium; Bernard Philogene seconded; motion carried. Lynn Riddiford moved that Pheromone Processing and Insect Saliva be submitted as the remaining two Section B symposia; Jeff Shapiro seconded; motion carried. Program symposia are due to program chair by December 12-13; list of speakers, talk titles, institutions, professional title, rationale are due to Sonny by mid-February. Symposia on Mosquito Olfaction and Insect Neuropeptides could be submitted as regular symposia. Richard Mankin asked about informal conferences. Sonny said that there will be no more "Conferences" at ESA; all will be called symposia but formal name has not yet been selected. Sonny will ask Dave Carlson and Yoonseong Park if they are interested in pursuing this for their symposia. Sonny will send reminders for people to think about 2004 symposia.

Florence Dunkel presented the slate (Marianne Alleyne is absent). Scott Hutchins has been nominated for Vice President-Elect. Sonny moved, per Scott's request, that Section B co-sponsor Scott's nomination, Dale seconded; motion carried unanimously. Section B members voted with results as shown below:
