Publications Reports
American Entomologist Editorial Board (Gary Brewer)
Thomas Bellows, Editor for 2002 resigned the editorship. Gene R. Kritsky was appointed Interim Editor. Because of this change, the winter issue of AE will be published 2 months late.
Gene R. Kritsky is soliciting and considering new Contributing Editor Column ideas. These ideas include:
"In the Field" - short stories of interesting experiences.
"What is it" - an unidentified insect photograph (identification provided on another page).
Sample 'Linnaean Games' questions (answers provided on another page).
"Natural History" insect fold-out with brief descriptive information.
Commentary - Leon G. Higley and David W. Stanley resigning as of 2002. Column may be continued in the same or another format, or may be cancelled.
Research Briefs - New contributing editor is needed (vice Kritsky)
Postmarked: Extension, U. S. A. - No submissions received during 2001 or 2002. A decision needs to be made to continue or terminate the column. One suggestion was to reformat the column with a new title such as "Topical Entomology" or "Extension Briefs."
Gary J. Brewer is the Editorial Board Chair for 2003.
Journal of Medical Entomology Editorial Board (Nilsa A. Bosque-Perez)
Manuscripts - Transition to new editors has gone smoothly.
22 unfinished Braum manuscripts received in March 2002.
William Reisen completed editing 10 manuscripts that were revised and accepted. These 10 are now at ESA.
The remaining 12 manuscripts are currently in review and assigned to new subject editors. Their status is as follows:
(a). 4 accepted, revised, and forwarded to ESA
(b). 2 accepted and undergoing author revision
(c). 6 rejected or withdrawn
Manuscripts received from ESA from March 1-November 12, 2002
Manuscript "Rejection Rate" was 40% during 2002
171 manuscripts received to date. This equates to 16 per month (10-22/mo.).
Estimated 2002 yearly total = 195 submitted and 117 published (60%).
2000-2001 average was 150 papers published.
Status of the 171 submitted papers in 2002 is as follows:
(a). 35 accepted, revised, and forwarded to ESA
(b). 23 accepted and undergoing author revision
(c). 38 rejected or withdrawn
(d). 75 in review (no decision as of November 20, 2002)
A summary of production issues was provided by Alan Kahan. Three staff have been lost due to budget cuts and downsizing. Number of published pages will be less this year. The ESA Rapid Review System online manuscript submission system will start Dec. 2, 2002. A demonstration was presented at this meeting.
