Minutes from the 2002 Subsection Fb Business Meeting, Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Call to Order & Introduction of Officers

The meeting was called to order by the Chair Karen Vail (University of Tennessee) at 4:40 pm, in the Floridian Ballroom A of the Ft. Lauderdale Convention Center on Monday, November 18th, 2002. Approximately 50 subsection members were in attendance. Vice-Chair, Dini Miller (Virginia Tech) and Secretary, Jules Silverman (North Carolina State University) were present.

Reading & Approval of 2001 Business Meeting Minutes

The minutes of the last meeting were distributed. Phil Koehler (University of Florida) moved to accept. There were several seconds to the motion and the minutes were approved unanimously.

Report on 2002 Subsection Activities

Subsection Fb was well represented at the 2002 meeting with nearly125 submitted papers and posters. Subsection Fb members presented in the following organized sessions:

§         Program Symposium: Urban Invaders: Their Biology in Their Homes and Ours

§         Formal Conference: Low Impact Methods of Urban IPM

§         Informal Conference: Promoting Urban Pest Extension Programs in an Agriculture-Based Environment

§         Informal Conference: Exotic Ants in Urban and Agricultural Environments

Old Business

Unlike in previous years, the rooms for the Symposium and Conferences were not filled to capacity. There were a number of scheduling conflicts between the conferences and submitted papers.

New Business

Use of Computer Projectors
This year the Society was budgeted for 8 computer projectors. Next year the budget will support 14 projectors. This will cover all symposia and many conferences. The approximate cost for a projector is $500/ day. A suggestion was made to solicit funds from industry to cover these costs so that projectors would be available for all formal and informal conferences. Computer presentations of 12 minute submitted papers were deemed by some to be impractical due to the time required to load the files. Others suggested that this has been done at the ESA branch level and all that is required is early presentation submissions via CD.

Urban Entomology Section
A suggestion was made to create a new section for Urban Entomology, possibly uniting with Ornamental and Turf Entomologists. Karen Vail proposed the creation of a committee to explore this option.

Call for Nomination and Election of Subsection Fb Secretary
Mike Scharf (Purdue U) and Jeff Hahn (U. Minnesota) agreed to accept nominations. A vote was held and Mike Scharf was elected.

Section Committee to Select the Section Symposia (2-Year Commitment)
Marc Fisher (Eastern Branch) volunteered and John Klotz (Pacific Branch) was volunteered and later accepted the position to perform this function.

Proposed Symposia for ESA 2003
Comments were made that too many conflicts arose between subsection Fb submitted papers and Fb formal and informal conferences and symposia. To avoid conflicts next year, it was suggested that we reduce the number of symposia (program, section and membership) for subsection Fb. Nevertheless, the following symposia were proposed:

§         Multicolored Asian Lady Beetles in Agriculture and the Urban Environment: (Jeffrey Hahn and Joe Kovach). The list of topics and speakers had not been prepared in time for the Fb business meeting. However, the program was submitted to Karen Vail (2002 Chair Fb) on December 4th 2002.

§         Spatial Analysis of Pest Movement in the Urban Environment, proposed by Richard Houseman, University of Missouri.

§         Regulatory Issues in Urban Entomology.

§         Wood Preservatives in the Pest Control Industry
