'Fly Man' Researches Pests on Alcatraz

Alert: ESA Customer Account System Unavailable in June

In June, ESA is upgrading its online system for member/customer accounts. Processes such as renewals, purchases, applications, and registrations are unavailable between June 1 and June 29.

Robert Kimsey, a forensic entomologist at the University of California, Davis, has earned the nickname "The Fly Man of Alcatraz," where he conducts research on the nuisance flies that plaque staff and tourists. The professor-researcher has traveled to the island about 50 times since July 2007. When he stays overnight, he sleeps in the same cell once occupied by "The Birdman of Alcatraz"-- Cell 42 in D block. So far, he has identified 17 species of flies on the island, where he also takes members of the UC Davis Entomology Club and graduate students to help with the research and learn about the insects.
