In memoriam: David Pimentel
David Pimentel, Ph.D., distinguished professor of ecology and agricultural sciences at Cornell, researcher, and writer, passed away at the age of 94.
Dr. David Pimentel a long time professor at Cornell and a prolific researcher and writer has passed away at the age of 94. Dr. Pimentel researched and published 690 scientific papers and also 40 books. Dr. Pimentel took some bold and at the time unpopular stands including coming out against the use of the pesticide DDT before it was banned. He was selected to be a member of the Secretary of Energy’s Research Advisory Board and came out against the use of Biofuels (like Ethanol) as a an actual waste of energy. Dr. Pimentel was also ringing the bell on the need for better conservation of soil and water, and population control long before we heard the term “sustainability”. Dr. Pimentel’s work on sustainability was groundbreaking and remains part of the foundation of work in that area even today.
