ESA Governance

The Entomological Society of America (ESA) is an organization of members involved in entomology. By volunteering their time and energy, members fulfill vital leadership roles within the Society, making important decisions and carrying out essential functions as stated in the ESA Bylaws. These roles are filled through elections by the membership.

Presidential Committees and Task Forces

Presidential committees and task forces may be appointed as needed by the ESA President to serve during his or her term. For example, such committees may study a particular topic or develop a recommended course of action. Some presidential committees are carried forward by successive presidents, while others are active for one to a few years.

Mission Statement

As adopted by the ESA Governing Board in July 2009, the Society's mission statement is:

The Entomological Society of America promotes opportunities for entomologists and enables them to share their science globally.

Outcome Statement

As adopted by the ESA Governing Board in July 2009, the Society's outcome statement is:

1. To ensure long-term sustainability by maintaining a financially strong, responsible, and accountable Society.

Standing Committees

ESA has the following standing committees. The current charges for the committees are stated below. Each year, ESA's Headquarters Staff works with the ESA President to modify these charges as needed to adapt to the most current needs of the membership.

Special Committees

Special Committees are established by a majority vote of the ESA Governing Board, to conduct a given charge for a specified period of time. ESA currently has the following special committees. ESA Past Presidents

The Entomological Society of America traces its roots to 1889, with the foundation of the American Association of Economic Entomologists. In 1907, the Entomological Society of America was founded, and the two organizations operated concurrently until their merger in 1953. Below, find a list of past presidents of both ESA and AAEE.

Policy Overview

The purpose of the Society is to promote the science of entomology in all its subdisciplines for the advancement of science and the benefit of society, to publish and encourage publications pertaining to entomology, and to assure cooperation in all measures leading to these ends. Committees

ESA Committees provide recommendations to the Governing Board, establish objectives and operational procedures, and assist in implementing various programs and activities. The Finance, Audit, and Ethics and Rules Committees are considered Standing Committees in the ESA Bylaws, while all other committees are outlined in the Society Policy Manual.
